Corrosion Control Solutions for Control Rooms
Reliability and availability of IT and electronic equipment are crucial for the smooth operation of IT-enabled services, KPOs, BPOs, Telecom, News and Media, Data Centers, Semiconductors, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Switch Rooms, and Motor Control Centers in Pulp and Paper, Refinery, Chemical, Fertilizers, and Petrochemical units.
Unwanted Airborne Contaminants Disrupt the Functioning of Electronic Equipment
Contaminants internal as well as external are largely responsible for huge losses in the IT-enabled industry. These seep into data processing facilities and corrode electronic equipment leading to malfunction and breakdown of computers, telecom systems, ACs, control panels etc.
Internal Contaminants
Contaminants are generally generated indoors in Data Processing and Computer Printing Facilities. These facilities are equipped with high-quality air filtration equipment to arrest very fine airborne particles generated from high-speed printers. If these are not removed then they deposit on the surface of disc drives and electronic circuits and can create maintenance downtime.
Similarly, gaseous contaminants released from machines using chemicals and toners corrode the delicate electronic circuitry of the computer, disc drive and printers.
Contaminant |
Contamination level |
Ammonia |
1.4-1.6 |
Chlorine |
.004~.006 |
Nitrogen Dioxide |
.002~.003 |
Ozone |
0.1~0.3 |
VOCs (as Toluene) |
.01~.02 |
External Contaminants
Offices are more prone to air pollution from gaseous/airborne contamination if it is situated near :
- Sewerage/drains
- Landfill sites
- High-density traffic
- Process Industry (emanating industrial effluents)
Gaseous contaminants and other sources of air pollution such as Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Bromine and Oxides of Nitrogen, Chlorine etc., seep into the conditioned space of modern plush offices. These gases alone or in combination with humidity and/or with temperature react with copper and silver in electronic circuit boards, server cards, EVA, cooling equipment, and datacom connections resulting in microelectronic corrosion/malfunction resulting in downtime losses. Downtime translates into data loss, revenue loss and ultimately customer dissatisfaction.
Why Do We Need To Protect Our Server And Computer Rooms?
Studies have shown that atmospheres which produce corrosion rates greater than 0.1 microns per year cause an unacceptable number of corrosion-related failures of micro-circuitry.
Corrosion Rate Per Year Vs Equipment Failure
<0.1 micron |
no failure found |
>0.1 micron |
intermittent failures in 1-2 years |
>0.4 micron |
inoperative in 2-4 years |
>0.6 micron |
intermittent failures in .5-1 year |
> 2 micron |
inoperative in 0.25 -.5 years. |
- For electronic equipment, the corrosion rate has to be below 0.1 micron per year.
- For electrical equipment, the same can be as high as 0.5 micron per year.
Gas Phase Filtration System – The Most Effective Way of Removing Airborne Molecular Contamination
Bry-Air Gas Phase Filtration Systems protect electronic equipment and devices from the threat of abrupt failures due to corrosive gases. It reduces downtime by removing corrosive gases through the process of adsorption and chemisorption. It is designed to maintain the ANSI/ISA-71.04-2013 standard, IEC standards and various other environmental standards followed by electronics manufacturers.
These GPF systems also neutralise odourous gases and make the environment comfortable for humans.
Bry-Air: A Step Ahead, Always
Bry-Air is the only Gas Phase Filtration Company in India having its own R&D and Testing Lab for granular media and chemical filters. Backed by world-class technology and systems, the laboratory is capable of testing the performance of impregnated/non-impregnated loose granular media and impregnated/non-impregnated air cleaning devices such as chemical filters, under one roof. The tests are conducted as per ISO/ASHRAE Standard 145.1 and BSR/ASHRAE Standard 145.2/ISO Standard 11155-2 guidelines. The core objectives of the tests are to assess the performance and efficiency of loose granular sorptive media and chemical filters in any particular application.
