For Uninterrupted Commute Hyderabad Metro Rail Trusts Bry-Air

The main depot of L&T-operated Hyderabad Metro Rail is located near the dead Musi River. This river releases corrosive gases such as NOx, SOx, H2S, VOCs, etc., causing corrosion issues in the critical rooms. To solve this problem, L&T installed Bry-Air Gas Phase Filtration systems that remove corrosive gases to protect their Control Rooms, Telecom Rooms, Simulator Rooms and Signalling Rooms from corrosion.

About Hyderabad Metro Rail

L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited or Hyderabad Metro Rail (LTMRHL) is the largest metro project in public-private partnership mode. It is owned by two stakeholders L&T – 90% and Telangana Government – 10%. It is the world’s largest elevated Metro Rail system based on DBFOT (Design, Built, Finance, Operate and Transfer) basis.

Problem

Corrosion in the critical rooms such as Control Rooms, Telecom Rooms, Simulator Rooms and Signalling rooms of L&T Deport.

Cause

Corrosive gases such as H2S, SOx, NOx and VOCs.

Source

River Musi, the dead river of Hyderabad runs through the Hyderabad city. This river is approx. 2-3 km away from the main depot of Hyderabad Metro Rail which is located in Nagole. It generates corrosive gases such as H2S, SOx, NOx, VOCs, etc.

Due to the proximity to River Musi, the poor gaseous environment impacts in the following ways:

  1. Contamination and Corrosion: Rivers often carry airborne particles and corrosive gases. When these contaminants come into contact with the sensitive electronic components and infrastructure of data centres, telecom rooms and signalling rooms, they cause corrosion or accelerate the corrosion process. It leads to malfunctions, signal disruptions, and potential system failures. It can also result in the degradation of wiring, connectors, and other critical components and high maintenance cost.
  1. Reduced Equipment Lifespan: Exposure to a poor gaseous environment significantly reduces the lifespan of equipment in data centres and signalling rooms. The corrosive gases and high humidity levels can cause premature wear and tear, leading to frequent replacements and increased operational costs for the metro rail system.
  2. Signal Interference: Corrosive gases and airborne pollutants from the Musi River interfere with signals within the signalling rooms. Signal interference can lead to errors in communication and data transmission. This interference can impact critical functions such as train control, signalling, and emergency response systems.
  3. Increased Maintenance and Downtime: The poor gaseous environment caused by the Musi River necessitates frequent maintenance activities and downtime for data centres and signalling rooms. The need for regular cleaning, repairs, and replacement of corroded components increases operational costs and disrupts the smooth functioning of the metro rail system.
  4. Health and Safety Concerns: In addition to the impact on equipment and operations, a poor gaseous environment can also pose health and safety risks for personnel working in data centres and signalling rooms. Corrosive gases and pollutants can have adverse effects on the respiratory system and the overall well-being of employees. These risks can lead to increased absenteeism, reduced productivity, and potential liability issues for the metro rail operator.

To mitigate these effects, it is crucial to implement appropriate air treatment and climate control measures.

Solution

To remove the airborne contaminants, LTMRHL collaborated with the experts in air treatment solutions, Bry-Air (Asia) Pvt Ltd. Our Airgineeres closely worked and measured corrosion potential in an enclosed environment of critical rooms using our Corrosion Classification Coupon (CCC).

We provided effective strategies to combat the poor gaseous environment causing corrosion and ensure the smooth and reliable operation of critical rooms.

We suggested installing the Bry-Air EcoScrub Gas Phase Filtration (GPF) System BPU Thin Vertical Air Purification System considering the areas of the corrosion-sensitive critical rooms.

No of Units Installed 10 (Thin Vertical Units)
Unit Capacities (in CFM) 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000
Application Areas Data Center

Signalling Equipment Room

Telecom Equipment Room

Backup Operational Control Room

Achievement

Corrosive gases sensitive critical rooms are now pressurised with dust and corrosive gas-free air. This ensures that the environment is maintained as per ISA 71.04-2013 and also removes odour from the critical rooms.

Key Benefits

The installation of Bry-Air BPU Thin Vertical Air Purification System in ITC-PSPD, Bhadrachalam brings a multitude of benefits, such as:

  • Help meet ISA 71.04-2013 G1 class environment inside the closed room
  • Efficient removal of airborne contaminants and corrosive gases
  • Safeguard sensitive electronic and electrical equipment from corrosion

The Thin Vertical Units (BPU-TV model) work in a recirculation mode of operation and remove airborne contaminants with the help of patented dry BrySorb special chemical filters. Providing unbeatable performance and desired results, we are associated with L&T operated Hyderabad Metro Rail from FY 2017-18 onwards.

Recommendation Products For Problem

Bry-Air offers a range of gas phase filtrations systems with different capacities to meet specific requirements. These models include:

  • Control Room Air Purifier (500-2000 CFM)*
  • Thin Vertical Bed System (500-200 CFM)*
  • BryShield (100 and 250 CFM)

*customisation as per request
